I have to appreciate Sennheiser’s GAME ONE headsets. They went out of their way to design their equipment with the needs of their users in mind.

Instead of focusing on the “cool factor,” like other high-end headsets, Sennheiser gave the GAME ONE a sleek, almost minimalistic look while still keeping that pro-gamer vibe. Then they took it a step further and equipped it with the best features we need to smash our in-game opponents for hours on end.

Sennheiser builds these headsets with materials they meticulously tested for long-term durability. Then they added luxury comfort features like a padded headband and velour-covered XXL ear pads that feel like heaven and let your skin breathe.

The noise-cancelling, flexible mic lets you position it wherever needed. Need to mute? Simply raise the boom arm. Move in and out of the communication zone in half a heartbeat.

The flexible mic retracts into the headsets, protecting it and keeping it well out of the way when not in use. The mic is noise-cancelling, allowing you to make those vital shot calls to your team with perfect clarity. A mute switch on the headsets comes in handy.

A combo 3.5 mm jack is equipped on the Razor Kraken, but it comes with an extension splitter for full audio and mic access for platforms on devices that require separate audio and mic input ports. Headsets vs. “plus-sized” heads

With a household of gamers all wanting to play on different devices at the same time, it’s essential to have our own headsets. With that being said, one size does not fit all.

If your head is like mine, you’ve no doubt noticed how most “standard” headsets are too small for the good ol’ noggin. A gaming headset that squeezes my face and makes my ears hurt gives me migraines.

Playing games such as Genshin Impact or Call of Duty, it’s imperative to wear the best gaming headset I can find. Yet, finding a headset I can comfortably wear for hours on end is a huge struggle.

There are three factors I have to consider when looking for a headset for my large cranium: an adjustable headband, larger ear cups, and breathable padding.

Adjustable Headband

My headbands need to adjust on both sides of the headband – ones that adjust on one side only tend to feel off balance to me. Padding on the headband is a plus.

Larger Ear Cups

Larger heads usually means larger ears, so I then look for large-sized ear cups that will fit over my ears and not press against them. Ear cups that fit right will channel all the sound right where it needs to go, and will let me take full advantage of the headset’s noise cancelling ability.

Breathable Padding

Another thing to consider is that most of our body heat escapes out of our heads and if you have a larger head, that’s more surface area for heat to escape. In short, our heads get hot quick.

So, it’s important to have padding that’s not only comfortable, but is made of a breathable material so I’m not having to take my headsets off every ten minutes to let my ears cool off. Less heat means less sweating and clogging of the ears – a problem I’ve had in the past with a headset that had vinyl pad covers.

Do I have to pay more for a plus-sized headset? Not necessarily. With gaming increasing in popularity, there are more options out there that give you all the comfort and sound features you need without necessarily having to break your bank account.

There are also some sweet, sweet luxury sets available if you have the cash to spoil yourself (or your friends or family members).

In this article, I’ve picked out some top headsets that will fit a wide range of budgets and styles. I’ll go over the basics of picking and choosing the perfect headset to don on your gorgeous gaming dome.

How To Choose The Best Gaming Headset for Large Heads

Now that I’ve discussed the pain points of headsets and what I look for when choosing one for my oversized skull, let’s go over in a bit more detail the common headset features to consider when making a purchase.

Connection

Connecting to a gaming device is one of the most important things to keep in mind. The ideal connector to look for is highly dependent on if you want a wired headset or a wireless.

For wireless headsets, I have found that most use a 2.4GHz WiFi connection, or they have a mini-USB emulator that they use. The 2.4GHz is more popular and simply hooks up through your wireless internet.

Moving onto wired headset. The most popular connector found on them is a 3.5-mm jack. This connects through your console’s controller, that way you are not hooked up directly to the console. It also hooks up to PC, and mobile devices as well.

The other way for a wired headset is a USB port. I personally have a USB connected gaming headset I use on my PC.

If you are not sure if USB headsets are better than 3.5mm headsets, you can read this article.

All it comes down to is whether you want a wired or a wireless.

Battery Life

Battery life is a key point to consider when choosing a wireless headset. How long do you intend to use your headset before you’re willing to let it charge up?

The average wireless headsets lasts for anywhere between 9-10 hours. For me, a wireless headset that lasts 7 hours is more than enough, but you may want more, especially if you’re a professional gamer.

Battery life can affect the price. Some higher-end models will last even longer, but that’s not always the case. Double-check stats and look for reviews that mention battery life to be sure you’re getting the duration you need.

Platforms

With gaming headsets it’s important to look at what consoles it will work with. Models equipped with a standard 3.5mm analog connector work with about any modern console.

If you are going with a wireless headset, check to make sure that the device you’re planning to use it on has bluetooth or WiFi capability, or a USB port. Most PC gaming headsets (even apple headphones) will work with PS4 or PS5 consoles. Sometimes that extends Xboxes as well.

It should state in the product description what systems the set is built for. If it doesn’t, go look at something else – you’re getting sold.

Weight

I have gone through gaming headsets that were so heavy that the pressure gave me massive headaches. When in possession of a big head, many headsets will have more material mass to them.

For us big-headed folk, a lightweight gaming headset is essential. I shoot for a desired weight of around 200-300 grams.

The material the headset is designed with is the major influence behind its weight. I specifically look for a gaming headset with lightweight memory foam padding and a mix of quality plastic (or fiberglass) and aluminum.

High-quality materials can command a higher price, but if you’re able to find your comfort zone with “cheaper” materials, it doesn’t need to cost you an arm and a leg. For example, my favorite go-to gaming headset weighs only 200 grams, and it was on the lighter side of the price range.

When it comes to weight, it all boils down to your personal experience, how long you tend to wear headsets, and how much you can withstand.

Physical Mute

Are you that one person who tends to scream and swear as a knee-jerk reaction when something in the game goes horribly wrong? Yeah, I’ll admit I do that, too. In that moment, having the ability to mute yourself on the fly is key.

Mute buttons can be the difference between being friends with your party, or your party questioning why they are still allowing you to be in their party. It’s a good thing for us that more headsets are made with on-set mute buttons.

If a wireless headset comes with a mute button or switch, you’ll find it either on the ear cup (usually the right one), near the mic. If the headset is wired then it could be on the connection cord.

If you intend to use the mute button frequently, choose a headset that has its mute button equipped on a spot you’re most likely to reach for.

Physical Volume Control

There are times where grabbing for a remote (that usually isn’t where you last left it), or going into the volume control on the computer isn’t an option – such as when you’re in the middle of an intense boss battle or PVP session.

Having a physical volume control can save a lot of heartache in the game. Not to mention it comes in handy when you’re confronted with that one annoying player who won’t stop chattering in the background.

A physical volume control on the headset will let you adjust the sound level in half a heartbeat. Like the mute button, the volume control is either on the headset itself or on the cord. Be wary, as some on-cord volume wheels run the risk of getting jostled during play, forcing you to make constant adjustments as you go.

Again, where you prefer your volume control depends on the brand you are looking at and what you are used to.

Detachable Mic

For me, having a detachable microphone on a headset is an option I don’t usually choose because that’s one more piece I have to keep track of. Most of my headphones have mics that flip up out of the way when not in use and that’s good enough for me but if you want a headset without a mic or one with a detachable mic, we have an article for that.

For others, a detachable mic is a major convenience. It decreases the weight of the headset and can minimize distractions. Some detachable mics will work off the headset for “head-free” use, or to make it easier to access features like the mute button.

Video producers may find this feature extremely useful, or if you want the option to switch from live chatting to listening to music without having to switch headphones.

Charging Port

Most of my gamer friends rarely consider what kind of charging port a headset has unless they’re sick of collecting boxes of mystery cords from deceased devices.

Personally, I like the stand-alone charging ports for my console-specific headsets. Not only does it help keep my cords hidden and organized, but it acts as a nice display and a “home” for the headset. Plus, it makes it easy to point them out to anyone who walks into my game area and say, “See those headsets there? Those are mine. No touchie!”

However, some situations require charging on the go. I will point out that some bluetooth headsets will continue to operate while charging, others will not (like the super-cheap one).

For PC users, a USB charger is essential. Tablets, smartphones, and a lot of other hand-held devices require a micro-USB. Some headsets may still use USB type A or B charge ports, but thanks to the recent demand for charge port standardization, most USB chargers are type A these days.

When it comes to corded charging, if I have to re-charge during use, I honestly prefer the good ol’ universal USB. USB charging ports are heavily installed in all of my outlets near my gaming areas, and USB outlet adapters are cheap enough that I have a small supply for immediate use no matter where I’m at.

Price

Budget is usually foremost on everyone’s mind when it comes to choosing a headset, but if I have learned anything over the years – especially when it comes to having a large dome to consider – is that you get what you pay for, for the most part.

I’ll be honest and say I definitely look at the lower-priced items first when it comes to choosing a headset. I don’t go too cheap anymore, because I tend to be a little rough with my equipment and I’ve destroyed a few too many “budget” headsets.

Cheap often means they are made of hard, brittle plastics that snap as soon as I squish them over my head. Then the ear-pads aren’t glued in right, they either scratch up my ears or fall right off.

I’ve had plenty of headsets that don’t equalize the sound right, cut out at the worst moments, or the power dies on me at the worst moment. Lower-end headsets often lack the ability to turn up or down the volume while I’m moving around, or have a connection jack reserved for one device.

Higher-end headsets are made of more durable, flexible materials like fiberglass or aluminum. Expect to pay more for sophisticated, high-tech sound control and quality, noise-cancelling features, and luxury ear-pad coverings like leather, velvet or velour.

When it comes to price, it helps to write down a short list of what qualities are essential for your needs in a headset, then evaluate your budget, and find something that either meets all of those needs, or provides a happy medium.

Remember, gaming should be fun, first and foremost. You won’t enjoy the experience if you’re constantly fighting with your head gear.

Still not sure which headset is right for you? You might want check out this article about the best HyperX headset.

In Summary

Best Wireless Gaming Headset

If you have a big head, you know how difficult it is to find a headset that fits properly and provides the right amount of comfort without causing your skull to overheat. Here are the questions we ask when looking for a headset.

Will the headset properly adjust enough to fit without pinching my head? The set is more likely to fit right if it can adjust on both sides of the head.

Will it comfortably fit around my ears so I can focus on the sound? Extra large earpads are a game changer for us.

Are the earpads made of a breathable material? Gel-injected pads, memory foam wrapped in velvet or velour, and/or ear cups with open ends let air flow, keeping the ears cool and the pads from compressing the ear. This keeps us from having to take the headsets off every five minutes.

Finding the right headsets doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. You can still get a good pair of headsets that have all the sound quality, connectivity, and style that you want without breaking your budget.

If you do decide to splurge, I’ve listed several options above to choose from. I’m confident you’ll find something soon that’ll become your new favorite gaming set.
